‘Nigeria will be strong like America’ – Okpebholo expresses optimism over President Tinubu’s reforms

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has expressed optimism that Nigeria will become as strong as the United States and the United Kingdom, while praising President Bola Tinubu for removing the fuel subsidy.

Okpebholo made the remarks on Thursday, October 8, 2026, during the All Progressives Congress (APC) statewide mobilisation tour in Agenebode, Edo State.

He described Tinubu as a courageous leader, arguing that previous presidents had avoided removing the fuel subsidy for fear of the political consequences.

According to the governor, past leaders, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, were unwilling to take the decision because of concerns that it could cost them their positions.

Okpebholo said the current administration’s economic reforms were aimed at addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges, expressing confidence that the country would emerge stronger.

He, however, urged the Federal Government to ensure that ordinary Nigerians benefit from the reforms, despite the difficulties associated with their implementation.
